In Unicorn Store (Netflix), Kit (Brie Larson) has just failed out of art school (due in large part to possessing an artistic style that is considered too childish) and moved back in with her well-meaning, but overly-concerned parents. In an attempt to prove herself an adult, Kit takes a job as a temp worker at some random company, doing some bland, pointless job. As Kit tries to adapt to her new life, she receives a mysterious invitation to a place called The Store. Intrigued, she goes there and discovers that The Store will provide her with her life’s greatest wish…a unicorn! But she’s got to prove that she’s worthy of it first.

"Premieres" will feature official trailers and synopses from what I feel looks like the most interesting (or the only, in some cases) original programming coming out in the subsequent week on Hulu, Amazon Prime, Netflix, and elsewhere. In no way to these previews represent recommendations or reviews. My intent is to post this segment each Thursday or Friday, but we'll see. Enjoy!

The Rookie (ABC) is a police procedural that follows the first year on the Los Angeles police department of three rookies. John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) is “the world’s oldest police rookie”, having decided to join the force after thwarting a bank robbery while in the midst of a divorce-induced midlife crisis. Through situations both harrowing and mundane, the rookies find their idealism tarnished, but not broken, by the realities they face trying to police Los Angeles’ chaotic and eclectic streets.

In Black Summer (Netflix), the prequel to the cult hit Z Nation, a group of survivors struggle to make it from the outskirts of an unnamed major city to a downtown where they will find evacuation to a safe haven. As they make their journey, they encounter increasingly dangerous situations as society crumbles around them. Are the bonds that they forge during this crisis durable enough to survive the challenges that they face? Or will they turn on each other when their individual survival seems most threatened?

In The Highwaymen (Netflix), Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson play Frank Hamer and Maney Gault, two over-the-hill former Texas Rangers credited with ending Bonnie and Clyde’s bloody rampage in 1934. While Hamer and Gault track the murderous couple, they confront their own blood-soaked pasts as they prepare for the final confrontation with their prey.

The second season of The Tick (Amazon Prime) picks up almost immediately after where the first season ended. The Terror is on ice (literally), The Tick and Arthur are the hottest superheroes in town, Overkill is tormented by his oath to Tick not to kill anymore, and Arthur’s sister Dot is traumatized by the destruction wrought by The Terror last season and discovering that she isn’t who she always thought she was. While Tick and Arthur battle a new scourge called Lobstercules, a hidden menace threatens the newly reinvigorated A.E.G.I.S, and the villainess Miss Lint recasts herself as the heroine Joan of Arc.

In Amazon Prime’s Hanna (a television adaptation of the 2011 film of the same name), baby Hanna is liberated from a secret CIA facility in Romania and raised in the deepest part of the forest by her father, Erik. He trains Hanna’s mind and body to be perfect weapons, capable of dispatching any enemy without hesitation. But Hanna, as many 15-year olds are wont to be, is rebellious and wants to see the world outside of the forest for herself. Her father reluctantly agrees, but before they can end their years of solitude, they must find and kill Marissa, the woman in charge of the secret CIA eugenics program than created Hanna, and the architect of the death of Hanna’s mother.
