In Super Troopers 2 (2018, currently on HBO), the troopers have been fired following an unfortunate incident involving actor Fred Savage on a ride along, but are given a second chance to be law enforcement officers when the United States acquires a Canadian town. Despite (or because of) their general ineptitude, they stumble upon a conspiracy to “passively” smuggle contraband into the United States once the handover of the town is official. The troopers must find the smugglers while confronting disgruntled Mounties and protecting a town that despises them.
I didn’t go into Super Trooper 2 with high expectations, but a part of me hoped that it would be surprisingly good, kind of like the “Baywatch” movie was. It wasn’t. This movie isn’t funny. In all honesty, I did laugh a couple of times while watching it. The first time was 38 minutes in. For real. A handful laughs during a 101 minute comedy is a terrible return on time invested. A big part of the problem with this movie is that it isn’t very creative. The first “Super Troopers” was funny (in a very stupid way) in part because it was relatively fresh: a new comedy crew, unexpected jokes, and some unusual humor. Super Troopers 2 doesn’t have any of that because it’s basically a rehash of the original.
All in all, Super Troopers 2 is a huge waste of time. There’s absolutely no reason to watch it over the original because it’s fundamentally the same movie, just much less funny. I don’t recommend this movie, even for Broken Lizard fans. You’d have more fun re-watching “Beerfest”.
