Simultaneously hilarious and heartbreaking. This is a wonderful memoir and I highly recommend it, especially the audio version read by the author. Hepola turns a wry and honest eye upon herself, exploring the roots of her drinking as well as the impact of coming of age as a woman in a time of fad diets and ever increasing body scrutiny (both from others and from oneself).
In looking back at her life, she discusses the challenges of trying to find a career path and her own voice as a writer, and slowly coming to terms with the fact that she didn't drink like everyone else.
The book manages to connect with a number of touchstones—what it means to be sexual as a woman, how we seek to please others, our relationships with our bodies and with alcohol, and our relationships with our friends and family. The book was moving and illuminating, sad and personal. Quite amazing.
