"Premieres" will feature official trailers and synopses from what I feel looks like the most interesting (or the only, in some cases) original programming coming out in the subsequent week on Hulu, Amazon Prime, Netflix, and elsewhere. In no way to these previews represent recommendations or reviews. My intent is to post this segment each Thursday or Friday, but we'll see. Enjoy!

Mini-Review of Proud Mary

A year after murdering his father, Mary (Taraji P. Henson), a hitwoman, rescues a boy from a life of being a drug runner for an abusive dealer, precipitating a war between her Boston crime family and the Russian mob. Henson is solid as Mary, but pretty much everything else about Proud Mary is either boring, half-hearted, or formulaic. There aren’t really any surprises in the movie, the plot and dialogue are dull, and the action sequences are second-rate. It’s not a completely terrible film,  but it’s also definitely not worth you investing 89 minutes of your precious time to watch.

In Equalizer 2, Denzel Washington reprises his role as vigilante Lyft driver Robert McCall. He helps people who have been wronged around town (and the world). His usual routine is shattered, however, when it’s his closest friend who needs to be avenged.

The Wandering Earth (currently on Netflix) is a Mandarin-language, sci-fi epic, based on the award winning novel by Liu Cixin about humanity’s attempt to move the entire Earth to another solar system due to the sun beginning its final stages of existence several billion years before expected. People have moved to underground cities beneath 10,000 engines that propel the planet through the solar system on its way to the Alpha Centauri solar system. While attempting a slingshot maneuver around Jupiter, a course miscalculation leads half of the Earth’s engines to malfunction. Both on the frozen surface and in a massive space station that guides the way for the planet, people struggle to repair the engines before Jupiter’s gravity causes Earth to collide with the gas giant.

The second season of American Gods (Starz) begins nearly immediately after the end of the first season’s epic finale. As the modern gods of high technology plot their revenge, Mr. Wednesday and Shadow prepare for war, gathering the ancient gods into an alliance and forging weapons for the fight ahead. Meanwhile, Mad Sweeney and Laura (Shadow’s dead wife) try to free themselves from Mr. Wednesday’s machinations and the African gods debate whether or not the upcoming war will benefit them and their people.
