"Premieres" will feature official trailers and synopses from what I feel looks like the most interesting (or the only, in some cases) original programming coming out in the subsequent week on Hulu, Amazon Prime, Netflix, and elsewhere. In no way to these previews represent recommendations or reviews. My intent is to post this segment each Thursday or Friday, but we'll see. Enjoy!

In Assimilate (2019, currently on Netflix), three high school friends in a small Missouri town try to unravel the mystery of why the town pastor is throwing “rats” at people’s houses. As they investigate this mystery, they discover that townspeople are acting increasingly odd. Unable to convince anyone to help them, the teens find themselves pitted against everyone that they know as they attempt to alert the world to a potentially global threat.

Prospect (2018, currently on Hulu) is a science-fiction film about a drug-addicted father and his extremely resourceful daughter, who travel to an inhospitable planet at the end of the universe for one last prospecting score. Ill-fated from the beginning, the journey turns into a struggle for survival against other hostile miners and a race against time as the last ship to human-occupied space prepares to depart.

Killing Eve (BBC America, AMC) is back for its second season. Yay! Picking up immediately after the end of Season One, we find Villanelle (Jody Comer) hiding from assassins after being unexpectedly stabbed by Eve (Sandra Oh) in last season’s finale. Now working for MI6, Eve must deal with the professional and personal ramifications of her obsession with Villanelle, while Villanelle learns to accept her new existence, untethered from the bonds that used to constrain her, as she tries to develop a relationship with Eve.

Between Two Ferns: The Movie (Netflix) is a mockumentary of a fake interview show that was popularized on Funny or Die and Adult Swim, starring Zack Galifianakis as the acerbic, occasionally dim-witted, self-absorbed host. After nearly drowning Matthew McConaughey, Galifianakis is presented with the opportunity of a lifetime: if he can interview 10 celebrities in two weeks, he’ll be able to leave his cable access show behind and be given a network talk show. As Galifianakis and his crew cross the country to interview myriad celebrities in their natural environment, a documentary film crew chronicles their trials and tribulations.
