Mini-Review of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

I’m not going to bother giving you an overview of the plot of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It’s laid out for us all in the first 60 seconds of the 155 minute film. And to some extent, that exemplifies what is wrong with this movie. When you combine the soulless monster that is J.J. Abrams' filmmaking with the soulless monster that is Disney, it’s not surprising that you end up with a soulless film. That’s not to say that The Rise of Skywalker isn’t entertaining, because for the most part, it is. I didn’t start getting really bored until the final 30 minutes of the movie. But it’s entertaining in the sense that it’s fun to watch cool CGI and space battles on a big screen.

"Premieres" will feature official trailers and synopses from what I feel looks like the most interesting (or the only, in some cases) original programming coming out in the subsequent week on Hulu, Amazon Prime, Netflix, and elsewhere. In no way to these previews represent recommendations or reviews. My intent is to post this segment each Thursday or Friday, but we'll see. Enjoy!

In Netflix’s The Witcher, Geralt of Rivia is a Witcher: a mutant created by magic whose life is dedicated to killing monsters for money. Shunned by humans who believe that Witchers are emotionless abominations, Geralt finds his fate intertwined with those of Yennerfer, an ambitious sorceress who craves power to salve the wounds of her painful past, and Cirilla, a young princess from the kingdom of Centra who is on the run from the forces of the Nilfgaardian Empire who seek to use her incredible untapped powers for themselves.

Review of Watchmen: Season One

HBO’s Watchmen takes place in the same world as the “The Watchmen” comics and movie, from which it’s name is derived. The world of Watchmen is similar to our own and shares historical parallels, but is distinct in that differences in some critical events led to the widespread adoption of masked vigilantism as a way to fight crime. In Watchmen, vigilantes in masks have been outlawed, but the Tulsa, Oklahoma police themselves wear masks and adopt secret identities in the normal course of their duties, nominally for the protection of themselves and their families. When it is discovered that the all-powerful Dr. Manhattan is on Earth and living under the guise of a normal human, carnage ensues as various groups vie for his power. As a backdrop to all of this, the legacy of the 1921 Tulsa Massacre’s unresolved legacy looms large.

In the fourth season of The Expanse (Amazon Prime) the crew of the Rocinate is tasked with going to an illegally colonized planet to determine if ancient artifacts present there pose a threat to humanity. Meanwhile, Secretary-General Avasarala is in the midst of a reelection campaign, as she tries to halt people from colonizing over 1300 newly discovered worlds until more is understood about them and how they came to be depopulated. On Mars, Bobby Draper finds that her homeland is changing before her eyes as the aftermath of war and the potential of immediately habitable new worlds throws the need for the entire Martian terraforming project into question.
