I don’t often get asked to review websites or online services, but when I do, I almost always say yes. It’s a nice change of pace from reviewing movies and television shows, plus I get to find some interesting websites that I may have not been exposed to otherwise. Case in point: Tremonster Films.

The White Helmets (Netflix) is a foreign-language documentary that follows the Aleppo branch of the White Helmets, a civil defense organization that has helped save victims of Syria’s civil war. They were the initial first responders on the scene of many air strikes and bombings conducted by Syria, Russia, and ISIS. The 40 minute documentary takes a look at some of the triumphs and tragedies of these modern-day heroes.

World of Tomorrow (2015) is a 17-minute animated short film by Don Hertzfeldt. In it, 4-year-old Emily is contacted by a clone of herself from 227 years in the future. This clone has been implanted with Emily’s memories (as is commonplace in the future, at least for those who are relatively well-off), so is basically future Emily. Future Emily then brings toddler Emily into the future and begins to tell her about what life is like there, including how she fell in love with a rock.

Zion (Netflix) is a documentary short-film about Zion Clark, a wrestler who was born without legs. The film details his struggles of growing up in abusive foster homes until he was adopted at age 16, his initial alienation from his classmates at Massillon High School (in Ohio), and how wrestling enabled him to overcome troubles in his past and forge a better future for himself.
By Dave B. Wanderer (2015, currently on Amazon Prime) is a 16-minute short film. It begins with a young man walking towards a secluded house in the desert. He encounters a young couple at the house and, after a brief introduction, the husband offers the traveler dinner and a place to stay for the night. The dinner proves surprisingly intense as the traveler and the husband verbally spar over various life philosophies and viewpoints, which paves the way for the film’s surprise ending.

The Oscar-nominated short documentary Heroin(e) (Netflix) relays the struggle of three women in Huntington, West Virginia who are attempting to stem the tide of the rising flood of America’s opiate epidemic’s impact on their community. Fire Chief Jan Rader, drug court Judge Patricia Keller, and Necia Freeman of the Brown Bag Ministry make truly herculean efforts to wring a few victories out of a situation that is ultimately doomed to be an unmitigated, unalterable defeat.
By Dave B. On the surface, Long Shot (Netflix) is your typical True Crime documentary: a crime is committed, someone is accused of the crime, and people with an interest in the case are interviewed. What sets this 39 minute film apart from most of the True Crime genre, are the absolutely amazing circumstances surrounding the suspects alibi.
